THE DIMLY LIT PONTOON boat glided along Moore’s Lake barely making a sound or a ripple in the near still water. Ian cracked open a beer and titled his face to the moon. “You and me going fishing in the dark, lying on our backs and counting the stars where the cool grass grows!”

“Oh, Jesus,” Hawthorne huffed and pinched the bridge of his nose, and Abby Evans giggled.

I raised my brows. “What Hawthorne? Haven’t you ever had the pleasure of hearing Ian sing you in some fish before?”

Hawthorne gave me a deadpan look, and I smiled broadly.

A dozen of us had squeezed onto the pontoon that tied to the end of the dock alongside Ian’s father’s speed boat. We launched the wide vessel into the water as soon as our crew of friends had arrived since the cabin was already overflowing with people. Most of the partygoers hadn’t been invited, but that was the way parties went along Moore’s Lake—they got crowded and crazy quickly.

It was a shock to the system after the calm ride out to the lake with Rose. It had been a quiet drive except for the soft music from the truck’s radio. I’d glanced over at Rose a hundred times, and let my eyes take in her beautiful features. Every time I looked at her, I got lost. I feared having the necessary conversation about Gabby might pop this beautiful bubble that we had created for ourselves.

Normally I didn’t avoid my problems but rather rushed headlong into them to fight whatever demons needed wrestling into submission, but all the crap I needed to tell Rose weighed on my chest like a boulder. If I didn’t start somewhere, we couldn’t begin to have an honest conversation about our true feelings for one another. And she might not forgive me for holding out on her this long.

But, once again, during the drive, I allowed myself to get swallowed by the pleasure of seeing her swim her fingers through the air as she hung her narrow wrist out the open window. I loved how strands of her chestnut locks would catch in the wind and float in the breeze while we cruised down the forest road. If I had my way, we would’ve skipped the party completely and headed straight for the dock house. Hell, I was so turned on by the mere thought of spending the night with Rose that I was ready to pull the truck over and have my wicked way with her before we even got to Mondavi’s cabin.

But I refrained from acting on my roadside fantasy and settled for stealing glances at her instead. I hadn’t been to the Mondavi cabin for a few years and was blown away to see that the place had undergone massive updates and renovations. Curtis Mondavi had effectively taken an old fishing lodge and transformed it into a forest party palace. I tried not to think of all the cabin parties that resulted in men like Curtis and his business associates coming out here to engage in their twisted and shady vices.
